These machines are essential to boosting agricultural output but also notoriously complex to transport. In this article, we’re pulling back the curtain on how an oversized agricultural machinery makes its way from the United States to Ukraine—through meticulous planning, engineering precision, and an array of challenges along the way.

1. How Machinery Finds New Life

Why does American machinery end up in Ukrainian fields? For one, the United States has an abundant supply of high-quality, used agricultural equipment. These machines, often well-maintained and with years of service left, become affordable options for Ukrainian farmers eager to expand their operations.

Ukrainian farmers and dealers search online marketplaces and auctions for the right machines and then reach out to logistics companies specializing in heavy, oversized machinery transportation. And here’s where the journey begins.

2. Size Does Matter: The Challenges of Oversized Machinery
Think about the size of a typical farm machine: a combine harvester can weigh up to 40 tons and span over 12 meters in length, not to mention the height and width. These giants are way beyond the limits of what conventional transport can handle. Moving them requires specialized vehicles, equipment, and highly trained teams, making it reliable and quality shipping of the valued equipment.

One of the first steps in shipping oversized machinery involves disassembling it as much as possible without compromising its structural integrity. Often, parts like wheels and attachments are removed and packed separately to reduce the bulk.

This type of sea transportation involves loading equipment onto a special RoRo vessel designed for the transportation of heavy and bulky cargo. Even a slight movement in a rough ocean, if the equipment is not properly secured, can cause thousands of dollars in damage or, worse, a dangerous imbalance on board.

Another type of sea transportation is container shipping. There are several types of special containers for oversized cargo, the most common of which is the Flat Rack. Equipment is loaded into such a container directly at the port or at a specialized warehouse that has the appropriate equipment.
Many cargoes bound for Ukraine arrive at ports in Germany, Poland, or Romania, where they are unloaded, checked for damage, and prepared for the final stage of transportation.

The last stage of the journey is the transportation of equipment from the European port to Ukraine. The logistics team prepares the documentation to make sure that everything complies with the import regulations and standards in Ukraine. Customs documents require careful preparation, as the absence of any detail can delay the shipment.
